The Difference Between Sublimation Paper and Heat Transfer Paper

You may have questions about what's the difference between sublimation paper and heat transfer paper. To totally understand the differences, you need to understand the principle of the sublimation and heat transfer first.

l  Sublimation

Sublimation is the phase transition of a substance directly from the solid to the gas phase without passing through the intermediate liquid phase. The color is used to absorb ink through an ink absorbing layer and then evaporated by heating. The molecules of the inks enter the transfer medium at a certain high temperature about 180°C and finish the color transfer procedure. So be sure to use sublimation ink and the transfer media are also required.

l  Heat transfer

Heat transfer is a discipline of thermal engineering and it is a process of transfer of heat from high temperature reservoir to low temperature reservoir. It allows the user to transfer it using a heat process onto essentially a porous surface that will allow the carrier film to stick to it. The color is absorbed and fixed by the ink absorbing layer, and then the ink absorbing layer is attached to the transfer medium through the glue layer, so it can be done with ordinary ink, and the transfer medium has no special requirement.

And let’s back to our theme about the difference about sublimation paper and heat transfer paper.

1.         Ink.

Sublimation paper must use sublimation ink. It's a dispersal ink and shows the original color after been transferred to the item by high temperature. At first the color printed on the transfer paper isn't the final color, and the original color will be displayed after the transfer.
Heat transfer paper can use with dye ink & pigment ink. Dye ink has the better ability of color reproduction, but it has poor waterproof, light and antioxidant capacity. After long-term preservation, it is easy to fade. And the characteristic of pigment ink is the opposite. The printed photos are better waterproof, anti light, antioxidant and preservation performance. But it is a little worse in color reproduction.

2.         Use

If you are going to print on some items like polyester, ceramic, metal, glass, etc. I will recommend sublimation paper. We supply sublimation paper of sheet sizes and most people will choose the sublimation paper for print small subject like mouse pad, mug, ornament or others. We also provide roll size for large format printing like sportswear.
And heat transfer paper is mostly used for 100% cotton T shirts. Sublimation paper has a good performance on polyester and it will be better for 100% cotton clothes with heat transfer paper. We offer T shirt transfer paper. It can only be used in fabric, not like sublimation paper which can be used on mugs or others. The light transfer paper is suitable for light color series T shirts like white, Pink, blue, yellow and light gray. The dark transfer paper is used for dark color series T shirts like black & brown.
